Root Canals in San Diego, CA

Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the nerves of the teeth. The notorious “root canal” has long been a scary thing for dental patients, but advances in dental technology have made the procedure more like a regular filling than major surgery.
The benefits of a root canal make it one of the most valuable dental procedures. Better local and general anesthetics and post-operative pain medications have greatly reduced any pain associated with the procedure.
When a tooth becomes infected with a deep cavity, it can spread to the nerves in the root of the tooth. The infected nerves must be removed and cleaned out or the infection can turn into an abscess, resulting in more serious and painful issues such as bone loss in the jaw, or systemic spread of the infection throughout your body.
We take cleanliness very seriously in our office and this philosophy extends microscopically to the insides of your root canal system! Root canal therapy begins by numbing the area around the infected tooth with a local anesthetic. Dr. Goldberg then accesses directly into the root canal system, carefully removing the infected tissue and cleaning the canal with different instruments. The clean but empty root canal system is then filled and sealed with a rubbery filling material called gutta percha. A tooth that has undergone a root canal is more brittle and should be fitted with a crown to give the tooth strength. A crown equalizes the forces of chewing across the tooth, improves the appearance of the tooth and ensures therapeutic success by completely sealing and protecting the tooth.
